Husband Faces Attempted Murder Charges In Beating

NEW WINDSOR, Md. (WJZ) ― A community is stunned after the husband of a Westminster doctor brutally beat her with a hammer.

Weijia Jiang reports neighbors say the couple did not appear to have any problems, but now the husband faces several charges for beating his wife, including first-degree attempted murder.

Anthony Soligny, 33, sparked an aggressive manhunt down the East Coast after police say he tried to beat his wife to death inside their New Windsor home, then fled the state. The weapon of choice was a household hammer.

"Our troopers recovered that hammer with a search warrant, and that was found to be a very large hammer that was made out of both hard rubber and steel," said Greg Shipley, Maryland State Police.

Police identify the victim as Dr. Michelle Nanda, 35.

According to the Johns Hopkins website, she practiced family medicine in Westminster. She's also the mother of Soligny's two children, a five-year-old and an 18-month-old.

Police say despite her severe injuries, Nanda was able to walk herself to the house across the street and dial 911.

Neighbors didn't want to talk about Nanda's state when she showed up to their home, but they describe her as a very good neighbor and friend.

"I have nothing negative ever to say about her. She's just wonderful," said Ronald McCallister.

McCallister, a patient of Nanda's for several years, says that kindness easily transferred to her work.

"She cares about her patients," he said. "You can't find that in a lot of doctors. A lot of doctors go in and it's in, and they do their job, and you're out. But her, she takes her time, and it's just very touching. I'm disappointed that that happened to her."

The investigation is ongoing as police comb through the timeline.

The hammer beating took place on March 2. Police set up a national alert for Soligny's car leading to an arrest in Georgia the following night. On March 9, he was extradited and a judge revoked his bail.

Soligny is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center without bail. Police don't know what triggered the attack.

Dr. Nanda has been treated and released from Shock Trauma, but her condition is not known.
