Md. Officials Release Statements On Museum Killing

MARYLAND (WJZ) ― An elderly gunman opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, killing a security guard before being shot.

U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin issued the following statement in response to the shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum:

"I have visited the Holocaust Museum many times with my family and today's despicable act is one that was intended to frighten and intimidate all people who care about equality and liberty. My prayers and thoughts are with the family of the security officer who has been gravely wounded. I also want to affirm my commitment to ending racial bigotry and hatred that have apparently led to this heinous act. There is no place in our society for individuals who would harm or deny rights to others, especially based on religion, race or ethnic identity."

Maryland Congressman Frank Kratovil released a statement.

"I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of today's shooting at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. This appalling and cowardly act is an affront to the fundamental American values of tolerance and religious freedom, and is a tragic reminder of the progress that remains in the fight against bigotry and hate. My thoughts and prayers, like those of all Marylanders, are today with the victims of this tragic attack and their families."

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon released the following statement:

"The violent attack on visitors and staff at the Holocaust Museum, and the murder of Stephen T. Johns, is a tragedy for all Americans.  The museum stands as a testament to the strength of humanity, and as a reminder that we must work vigilantly to prevent a repeat of the atrocities of the last century. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the attack and their families.

We live in a country that values individuality and the freedom of thought.  Settling disputes with violence is the antithesis of those values, and only serves to drive people apart."
