Frederick Voters Elect Whole New Legislative Body

FREDERICK, Md. (WJZ) ― Voters in Frederick did what many others have threatened to do: elected a whole new legislative body.

Political reporter Pat Warren explains none of the incumbent aldermen in Frederick appears to have won re-election.

Halloween decorations still hang in Ed Robinson's front yard.  Maybe it's a haunting illustration of what happened in the city election Tuesday?

"We have a great asset here in the city of Frederick and people are just frustrated by the economic situation, how decisions are made, and they wanted new sets of eyes to look at the problems and make the decisions," said Ed Robinson.

A whole new crew is coming to Frederick City Hall.  The three incumbent aldermen were defeated by voters like Ed Robinson.

"I'd say that there's a whole tide in this country, people unhappy with the status quo and I believe that Frederick is just symbolic of that," he said.

That tide turned on the City Board of Aldermen in west central Maryland.  This is the Frederick County seat and the third largest incorporated area in the state.

Political analyst Herb Smith says this election says something about how people are thinking about government these days.

"Every election when an incumbent loses sends a very powerful message that you need to take care of business.  You need to please your voters, please your constituents and work hard," Smith said.

Michael O'Connor, newly elected, is anxious to get started.

"It's not about me.  It's not about the mayor and the board.  It's about the city and the citizens and I think we need to continue to do everything we can to activate them and engage them in the life of this community," he said.

"The beauty of democracy is if you're not happy, you can always vote that person out and try someone else," Smith said.

Two of the three incumbents were in their first term.

The results of the election won't be official until the absentee ballots are counted.  Those ballots are still coming in.
