Two of Maryland's leading men are listed among America's Best Leaders.
Dr. Ben Carson and Freeman Hrabowski will appear in Friday's edition of "U.S. News and World Report."
Pat Warren has more on why they were chosen.
Name the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County and you have named two of America's Best Leaders chosen by "U.S. News and World Report."
Dr. Ben Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in June for his pioneering work in medicine. Some of his best work includes the surgery featured on
Eyewitness News, where he removed half of little Jessie Hall's brain.
"I hope it encourages young people all over the country to recognize that it is not where you came from, it's where you're going that counts," said Dr. Carson.
There's a like-mindedness between Carson and Hrabowski, UMBC President. His hands-on enthusiasm for math and sciences teaches students it's cool to be smart.
"I think the first piece of advice, dream. Dream big. Think about the possibilities. And then look at what it takes to reach the dream. Nothing will be more important than discipline and hard work," said Hrabowski.
"I always tell my students, the winner is not the person who always succeeds, the winner, the real winner, is the person who knows how to get back up, when she is knocked down," said Hrabowski.
There are 21 America's Best Leaders named by the magazine. They will be honored in Washington, D.C. next week.
