It's a long way from Ellicott City to Europe, but a young Howard County woman has made the journey.
Ron Matz has more on a handbag designer who, at the age of 22, has become a superstar in the world of fashion.
Danielle Diferdinando designs beautiful handbags. She was just 18 when she headed to New York City to launch her dream.
"When I went to New York, I was so taken by all the fashion, Oscar de la Renta, Prada, Gucci, I wanted to be the next Donna Karan, that's my goal," she said. "When I was 18, I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology. From there I studied accessory design and merchandising and I interned at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. I was in the buying department, so I learned the business aspect of what it took to be a successful designer and to have your line carried in department stores."
She learned the business and in 2006 Danielle Nicole Handbags was born. Her line was an immediate success. Her bags are sold in high-end stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
Danielle Nicole Handbags are known from Harbor East to around the world.
"From Bergdorf's, Neiman Marcus picked it up, Saks picked it up and Handbags in the City picked it up, so we've been expanding. We're worldwide. We're also carried in department stores in Hong Kong, Japan, Toronto, Canada and Tokyo. It's a lot of work and it's not easy," said Diferdinando.
Diferdinando works 16-hour days, designing handbags made of soft Italian lambskin, which makes the bags lightweight and functional.
"The bags are very lightweight. All the bags are lined with washable ultra suede, so in case a woman spills something like make-up, she can just take soap and water and the stain will come right out," said Diferdinando.
Danielle Nicole Handbags can be found in Baltimore. They're sold exclusively at Handbags in the City.
"We have a great relationship together. I love her bags. They're actually what our clients are looking for, lightweight and a lot of style with very soft leather. We just love them," said George Sakellaris, Handbags in the City.
Danielle's handbags sell from $180 to $500. A less expensive line is already in stores.
Danielle is a graduate of River Hill High School. She has come a long way, from Ellicott City to fashion superstar in just four years.
"Every day it's what's next. What can we do to make the line bigger and better and get the name out there? It's a great feeling. I travel once or twice a month to keep up with the trends, to see what's going on worldwide. It's a lot of fun," said Diferdinando.
Danielle lives in New York City, but returns to Howard County often to visit her family. She'll be back in Baltimore for a trunk show at Handbags in the City in Harbor East on Dec. 18.
