Constellation Energy Buys W.Md. Wind Power Project

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
There's a new deal for Constellation Energy. BGE's parent company will take on a brand new wind power project in western Maryland.
Adam May has the details of the new agreement.
This deal would increase Constellation's energy production by about 1%. It's a small drop in the bucket, but it would be the company's cleanest.
Constellation Energy will soon build 28 wind turbines in the mountains of Garrett County after purchasing the project from a California-based company, Clipper Wind Power, for $140 million.
"It's certainly clean, green energy, and that's something that's all good for all of us here in the state," said Rob Gould, BGE spokesperson.
According to Gould, the new wind farm will provide enough energy for 23,000 homes. But don't expect it to replace polluting sources of energy, like coal.
"Any time you can introduce more renewables into the system, you're certainly putting a different fuel mix into the system. But the reality is we still need coal, we still need nuclear. You need a diverse fuel mix to be able to meet the state's energy mix," Gould said.
The project has been in the works for a couple of years, so it already has state approval. As long as the sale to Constellation gets the OK from government regulators, the production of this green energy should begin sometime next fall.
