Students Plant Garden To Remember Murdered Family

Some classmates of Greg and Ben Browning planted a special memorial garden in the victims' memory.

Students at Cockeysville Middle School took a big step toward healing Thursday after the deaths of two classmates.
Suzanne Collins reports the two students and their parents were murdered early this year. An older brother has been charged in their murders.
Crying can help heal the soul. Turning to others can be a comfort. Some classmates of Greg and Ben Browning planted a special memorial garden in the victims' memory.
"The way I cope with it is Greg. He wouldn't want us all to be sad, so I try to get through it, not alone but with other people," said Tipher Fisher.
Greg and Ben Browning and their parents were murdered in February. Their older brother Nick is charged with the crime.
"To help the students to know maybe it's OK we never come to an answer of why. But we have a garden now to reflect and think about the positives of the boys and their parents," said principal Phil Taylor.
"He just had a way of making everyone laugh. He was a quiet part of our class, but an important part of our class," said Glenn Segal, Greg's teacher.
"We were very close family friends. I was close with Greg the most, but I also knew Ben. It's affected us all greatly and you really just have to think about all the good times you had with all of them," said JP Schmelz, victims' friend.
A parent involved in bringing about the memorial garden said this is where students can reflect. It's a place to make dreams.
"I think it can really help kids get through this tragic event 'cause everyone is in a kind of state of shock," said Fisher.
Even three months later, talking about it is too much to bear. But turning dirt and planting flowers and honoring the family with a plaque seems to bring peace. The plaque says the Brownings are gone, but not forgotten.
Children also knew the parents well. Tammy Browning was active in the Parent Teacher Association. John Browning was involved in Boy Scouts.
