Child Found Wandering In East Baltimore Identified
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
A young girl found wandering alone in East Baltimore Monday night has been identified.
The mother of 3-year-old Nyshira Noble was terrified at 3 a.m. Monday, after her daughter unlocked the door and wandered off onto the streets of East Baltimore.
Mike Schuh reports authorities have questions about why the mother waited for eight hours to call police. The Department of Social Services is still talking with the girl's mother and grandmother.
The child was found walking in an alley in the 600-block of North Potomac Street.
When she was found, the adorable child was asking for her mommy. When police asked her for her name, she said it was Miss Cake, but they later found out her real name was Nyshira Noble.
"It's 2:30 in the morning and a 17-year-old and her sister find Nyshira in this block, problem is she has to cross a roadway to get here," said Whitney Ward, who found the girl.
Rather than call police, they try to find her parents.
Initially when Whitney Ward found the little girl, she tried to find the parents so mom and dad would not get in trouble.
"So it wasn't an issue of neglect. It was an issue of why I waited so long to call them. I figured I would find her so police wouldn't have to be involved," said mother Cassandra Lee.
But police were involved by 4:30 a.m. after Ward and her sister could not find the parents. But Nyshira's mom didn't call police until 11 a.m. Tuesday.
"I started searching for her around 3, 3:15 a.m. came back around 11 a.m. to call police," said Lee.
Nyshira's mother has a simple explanation of how she left. Her active spirited curious daughter can unlock doors, even in the middle of the night.
"She leaves out the door if nobody's not watching her and just walks off by herself," said Georgette Kearse, the girl's grandmother.
Nyshira's family has a court date Wednesday. They believe after an appearance before a judge, they will have their little girl returned to them.
Neither police nor Social Services would talk about any charges in this case.
