Brian Roberts Acknowledges He Used Steroids

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― The fallout continues for the Orioles after several current and former Orioles were named in the Mitchell Report on steroid use.  Brian Roberts speaks out for the first time and Kathryn Brown has more on what he did and why he did it.

Brian Roberts admits to using steroids once back in 2003, a decision he now calls "terrible."  He broke his silence in an interview with CBS Radio Tuesday.

Brian Roberts broke his silence to ESPN 1300-S Anita Marks, admitting that yes, he did use steroids one time back in 2003.

"This is not something I'm proud of.  This is not something I'm happy about," he said.

Roberts is one of a dozen current and former O's to make it into the Mitchell Report on steroids in baseball and the first to speak publicly about his steroid use.

"I wish I could give you a good, strong answer of why this happened and why I did it.  I think the best thing that I could say is probably that as much as anything, it was curiosity," Roberts said.

Players named in the 409-page report are beginning to step forward, including World Series champ Andy Pettitt.

For his part, Roberts offers no excuses, instead asking fans for a second chance to prove himself.

"That's what hurts me is that I know this will in some way detract from that and that bothers me."

Though he has publicly apologized to his fans, many are still undecided about whether they'll forgive him.

"I think he deserves to be punished just because if it's against the rules, then you should be punished," said Joshua Robinson.

"There's a lot of athletes who denied it and continue to deny it," said Justin Bakhshai.

"I read where he said he only did it once and he's sorry about doing it but that's the same with anybody else.  I mean, Clinton said he didn't inhale," said Anna Doyle.

Roberts has twice been named to the American League All-Star team, including this past season.

The only other current Oriole named in the Mitchell Report, Jay Gibbons, received a 15-day suspension from the commissioner's office on Dec. 6 for violation of Major League Baseball's drug policies.
