Accused Cop Killer Cleared Of Unrelated Charges
BALTIMORE (AP) ―
The State's Attorney's Office says Brandon Grimes, who is accused of killing an off-duty city police officer, was acquitted of handgun charges in an unrelated incident.
A Baltimore jury found 23-year-old Grimes not guilty on Friday of charges that included possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office.
The panel deliberated less than two hours. The charges against Grimes stemmed from an incident in April 2006 after police had stopped him in a car near his home.
Grimes allegedly tossed a handgun into a nearby yard after leaving his car and going into his home.
Grimes was scheduled to go on trial this week for the January 2007 shooting death of 34-year-old Detective Troy Chesley, but the prosecutor was involved in another trial. Grimes' trial was rescheduled for Aug. 13.
