More than 250 people gathered at a memorial service on the Eastern Shore for a tribute to John Short. He's the man who lost his life after his truck smashed into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Weijia Jiang reports friends and families are remembering Short.
It was a quiet memorial service at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in the Eastern Shore town of Pittsville for a quiet man.
John Short, 57, is described by co-workers as one of those guys you just want to be around.
"He just seemed like that type of guy you want to go talk to," said Aaron Moreland, Mountaire driver.
"Very, very pleasant, easy to talk to, just a fun loving person," said Ivan Sutton.
One week ago, a horrific accident cost Short his life. Around 4 a.m., the tractor trailer he was driving plunged into the water after he broke through the jersey wall of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
"That was hard to take because stuff like that never happened before, especially at that time of night, so it's very terrible," said Sutton.
Police say Short swerved to keep from crashing into a Camaro that was heading the wrong way on the two-way span.
Later the driver, 19-year-old Candy Baldwin, who called her car powerful and sexy on MySpace.com, admitted to a Washington newspaper she fell asleep at the wheel.
"She has given us statements. That's all I'm going to say on her statements right now," said a spokesperson for Maryland State Police.
Family members at the service were too emotional to talk with
WJZ, but friends paint their picture by focusing on how much Short meant to the community.
"It's just a sad situation," said Ronald Patey.
Baldwin's driving record shows a history of speeding. At this time, she has not been charged with causing Short's death.
