Baltimore County To Take LNG Fight To High Court
TOWSON, Md. (AP) ―
The Baltimore County government is expected to take the fight over a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal to the nation's highest court.
Aides to County Executive Jim Smith say a formal appeal will be filed at the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.
In May, a three judge panel of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court ruling which favored the county.
The panel ruled the county violated federal law when it changed its zoning to define the planned terminal site as a critical coastal area.
Critics of the project say the terminal planned for the old Bethlehem Steel mill site, and a planned 88-mile pipeline to Pennsylvania, would harm the environment and would be a terrorism target.
Several labor unions support the project.
