Contaminated Water Causes Problems
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
People in Anne Arundel County are afraid to drink water from their own tap. They say cancer causing chemicals are contaminating their groundwater.
Jessica Kartalija reports, there's a lawsuit being filed against Constellation Energy.
Who would have thought a bi-product of burned coal could make its way from a dump site in Anne Arundel County into the groundwater.
Now, Constellation Energy, the company responsible for dumping the ash, is supplying residents with cases and cases of water.
"They tell me my water is okay, but I am still being supplied water. What is wrong?" said Jeanette Ham.
"We're obviously working with the Maryland Department of the Environment, the county, and the residents, to address this matter satisfactorily," said Rob Gould.
"Hot water tanks, toilets, and dishwashers turn yellow, and they do not stand up sturdy. The material deteriorates," said Ham.
"I would just like to see it cleaned up. Whatever is wrong with it, get it corrected," said Andrew Queen.
Mrs. Queen's home has been up for sale for some time, and in a housing market that is already difficult, you can imagine that this has also created more of a problem.
At least five homes in the area have been up for sale, and the sale has not been successful.
"We filed a lawsuit asking Constellation to completely clean this community to remediate and restore the ground and the water and the air so people can live in peace and enjoy their lives," said Hassan Murphy.
