Tropical Storm In Atlantic Now Named Erika
MIAMI (WJZ) ―
Tropical Storm Erika, which formed late Tuesday in the western Atlantic Ocean, was headed toward the northern Leeward Islands early Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its last advisory.
At about 5 a.m., the poorly-defined center of Erika was located about 280 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west at 5 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and several other of the Leeward Islands.
Erika, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, was expected to turn west-northwest with slightly increased forward speed over the next day or two, and some strengthening was possible during the next 24 hours.
Most computer models show the system taking a northwesterly track toward Florida and the Southeast U.S. coast, but some show it steering a more westerly course toward the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
