UMd Receives $9.9M Grant To Study Human Microbiome

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

The University of Maryland School of Medicine announced Tuesday that it has received a $9.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a database on the human microbiome -- the bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that live in and on our bodies.

Professor Owen White, a researcher at the University of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences, will lead the group developing the database that will be available free to researchers nationwide. The database will be located at the institute's new headquarters at the University of Maryland BioPark.

In December, the NIH announced the $115 million "Human Microbiome Project," which is working to sequence the genomes of 600 microbes. The University of Maryland grant is one of 11 totaling $21.2 million awarded Tuesday by the NIH.
