With one week left of school, summer break is right around the corner and that means fun in the sun. However, kids and their parents may not be doing enough to protect themselves while they sun themselves at the beach or around the pool, CBS station WFOR-TV reported.
A recent poll revealed that Americans are still not wearing enough sunscreen despite being aware of the dangers of skin cancer.
The survey, conducted by
Consumer Reports, found that 31 percent of Americans do not wear sunscreen if their going to be out in the sun. Women report using sunscreen more than men, but admit that they do not routinely apply it to their children.
The people surveyed provided a wide range of reasons why they do not apply sunscreen, some of them include:
- Stinging or bothersome sensation in the eyes
- The "stickyness" factor when it comes to the sand
- The cost of the sunscreen
Perhaps most alarming is that 21 percent report having been examined by a dermatologist who recommended the use of sunscreen but failed to follow that recommendation.
Here are some tips for keeping safe in the sun:
- Apply sunscreen whenever going outside into the sun
- Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure
- Pay attention to the expiration dates on your sunscreen products
Don't rely on sunscreen alone to protect your skin. Wear tightly woven clothing and a broad-brimmed hat, limit sun time, and seek shade during the hottest hours of the day.
