Normal Soybean Harvest Expected On Lower Shore

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) ―

Soybean crops on the Lower Shore appear to have fared better this year than crops on the mid-shore and in Delaware.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Crop Reporting Service is forecasting an average soybean yield of 29 bushels per acre, slightly better than last year's average and in the normal range for the region.

Harvests begin on the Lower Shore in the next few weeks. On the mid-shore, where harvesting has already started, farmers are reporting yields below the state average.

Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner announced her state is requesting a drought disaster declaration. The Delaware Department of Agriculture is estimating that two-thirds of the state's soybean, corn and hay farmers sustained crop losses in excess of 30 percent.
