Peeps To Get Their Own Store
OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ―
The pastel marshmallow candies known as Peeps have a devoted cult following. They've participated in science experiments, survived battles with microwaves and inspired avant-garde art.
Now, they're going to have their own store. The first Peeps & Co. store is scheduled to open in November at National Harbor in Oxon Hill.
A spokeswoman for Peeps parent company Just Born says the store will sell a variety of Peeps paraphernalia including T-shirts; plush Peeps in chick and bunny shapes; Peeps pillows, pens and key chains; and Peeps china.
Candy has turned into a growth industry in the recession. Market research firm Mintel says sugar confectionary sales grew an estimated 4.3 percent to $2.1 billion last year after flatlining for several years.
