Gov. Encourages Eating Home-Grown Produce

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― Think you can eat something from Maryland every day for a week?

Gov. Martin O'Malley is hosting a cookout on the lawn at the Governor's Mansion to promote a state campaign to eat locally produced produce, meat and dairy products.

The Department of Agriculture is promoting a weeklong "Buy Local Challenge" with consumers urged to eat something produced in Maryland at least once a day. The challenge starts Saturday and lasts until July 27.

The cookout features Maryland watermen and farmers, serving homegrown treats such as sweet corn, rockfish, tomatoes and barbecue chicken.

Restaurant owners and grocery buyers are invited to sample Maryland items they could carry.
