A Convoy of Hope visited Baltimore Saturday, delivering services and supplies many people need. As
Gigi Barnett explains, the event is a partnership between local churches and community organizations.
In an empty field in northeast Baltimore, the Convoy of Hope set up shop. It's a partnership between Baltimore-area churches, community groups and the Convoy of Hope, a non-profit organization that brings it all together.
"We have so many services for people to take advantage of," said Kelly Harrison.
He's the local Convoy of Hope coordinator and says the convoy will serve about 3,000 people.
"It's for folks that are really facing tough times. We know that in the economic situation we find ourselves in as a county, there's a lot of people hurting," Harrison said.
Guests receive free clothes, help with resume skills and even haircuts.
"When they sent the flyers out, I was like, `Wow, this is really great. Baltimore is doing this?!'" said Jme Bristan.
It takes hundreds of volunteers to get the job done.
"I really do feel good when people come in and I give them a nice hairstyle and they like the work. It makes you feel good," said Annette Oladokun.
But the convoy also brings fun, too, with music on stage and autographs by current Ravens and former Colt players.
In addition to the jobs, haircuts and family portraits, the Convoy of Hope also gave away food, all bagged up and ready to go. At least 80,000 pounds of food went home with people who attended this event Saturday.
The Convoy of Hope's next stop is Manassas, Virginia.
