What we're served as a child shapes what we eat the rest of our lives.
Mike Schuh reports a charter school in the heart of Baltimore is not only telling students about healthy choices, but is getting national attention for letting them see it for themselves.
At the Hampstead Hill Charter School, everyone learns about food -- food grown from their own garden.
"It's a lot easier to start these things now than it is to wait until things start going wrong with our bodies and try to back pedal and correct things," said Chrissa Carlson, teacher.
Such teaching has changed Deboria Ross.
"It's just really big. At every school thing or celebration, we have food, and it's really healthy and good food," said Ross.
What they're doing is following them home.
"We eat more fruits and vegetables instead of greasy, fat foods," said Ross.
"Eating well is really all about being ready for school, and we want kids to make good choices," said Matt Hornbeck, principal.
This focus on food carries over into the cafeteria. Unlike most other schools, this school's lunch smells good.
A special guest was on campus Friday to take a look.
"Nice, this is awesome. I'm so impressed, I don't have this," said Sam Kass.
"He is Sam Kass, the White House chef. So he cooks for the Obamas every night," said Carlson.
He saw the class in action and ate from their garden.
There are hopes this type of learning can be exported to other schools around the country.
"It's the choices they'll make later in life that will really matter the most," said Hornbeck.
The principal was quick to invite the first lady for a visit if she needs a school to showcase her ideas about health choices for school kids.
