New Planting Program Encourages Putting Down Roots

  More Information About Tree Program

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― The fall planting season is underway.

Mary Bubala reports the state of Maryland wants to reward you for putting down some roots.

Fall foliage is just beginning to reveal its beauty across Maryland.  The state hopes that lures more people to plant new trees in their yards.

"Well, we all know how important it is for the water, the streams and creeks that flow into the Chesapeake Bay, for the air we breathe, for the beauty to provide shade and to save on energy costs," said Terry Galloway, Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Homestead Gardens is one of 70 nurseries across Maryland helping the state reach the ambitious goal of 50,000 new trees planted by next year. The state is offering $25 coupons toward the purchase of native trees costing $50 or more.

"The coupons are available online, on our trees, on our website and the Department of Natural Resources' website," said Tim Hamilton, Homestead Gardens. "We've had a huge uptick in the sale of natives in the last six months, especially in the spring, but fall is actually the best time to plant."

The Department of Natural Resources is giving away prizes every month in a drawing of those who register their trees.

"Anybody who has planted any trees anywhere on their private property, at their schools, should consider registering them online and be counted toward reaching our goal," said Galloway.
