D.C.-Area Cabs To Run On Propane

WASHINGTON (AP) ― About 1,000 D.C.-area taxicabs will be modified to run on propane thanks to a federal stimulus grant.

The $9 million grant under the Department of Energy's Clean Cities program will also fund the construction of several propane filling stations.

The new cabs will burn a small amount of gasoline but will get most of their energy from propane.

Companies participating include Red Top Cab in Arlington County, Va., and Regency Cab in Gaithersburg, Md., each of which will have 100 cabs converted.

Charles King, vice president of Red Top Cab, says he hopes the propane cabs will help keep fares down while allowing the company to maintain full-size vehicles.

Alliance AutoGas will oversee the conversion of the cabs and the construction of the stations.
