A local co-op has found a way to help you trade in your gas guzzling lawn mower for a coupon toward a green machine.
Tim Williams reports the program is called Cash for Lawn Clunkers.
It's not how quickly you mow or how thick you grow, but the business of going green is nothing to toy around with. That's where a new program comes into the picture.
"We're calling it Cash for Lawn Clunkers," said Britt Slattery, Audubon Maryland-DC.
Cash for Lawn Clunkers allows you to trade in your old gas-guzzling lawn mower for a coupon worth up to one-third off the cost of a new, battery-powered cordless, rechargeable electric mower.
"Gas mowers produce as much air pollution as 10 cars driven for the same amount of time. So, it's great people are considering taking their gas mowers off the road, so to speak, and choosing a cleaner option," said Slattery.
Audubon Maryland-DC, The Herring Run Watershed Association and Baltimore City make up this clean air initiative, which is being sponsored by Neutron Power.
The program allows for oil and gas to be drained and disposed of properly and lawn mowers to be dropped off.
After the old gas guzzlers are traded in, they'll be tossed into a dumpster, where the city will then haul them away, and the metal will be recycled.
