WJZ Speaks To Oprah About 'The Color Purple'

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Baltimore has turned "The Color Purple," and it has nothing to do with the Baltimore Ravens.

Richard Sher reports the smash Tony Award-nominated musical is now playing at the Hippodrome.

It's the story of a young woman named Celie who triumphs despite enormous obstacles to find her own voice.

It's very similar to Oprah Winfrey's story.

"I'm thrilled to have 'The Color Purple' in Baltimore," said Winfrey. "After all, Baltimore is where I started to become the woman that I am today. I was living at The Village of Cross Keys when I read a review of Alice Walker's book, and ran to the mall to buy it. I've kind of been obsessed with the story ever since."

Winfrey played the role of Sophia in the motion picture and decided to put up millions to produce the show that eventually opened on Broadway.

More than one million people have seen "The Color Purple." It's playing now through May 18 at the Hippodrome.
