Had he lived, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead would have turned 66 Friday.
Richard Sher reports to honor the man and his music, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will present the world premiere of composer Lee Johnson's Dead Symphony Number 6, a 10-year endeavor. "I think it's a tribute to BSO that Dead Symphony Number 6 will debut on their stage. It is time to celebrate the Grateful Dead," said Johnson.
The lobby of the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall will be converted into a counterculture museum, featuring Grateful Dead memorabilia and rare photographs taken by Baltimore native Amalie R. Rothschild.
"For me, Jerry Garcia will always be the dark-haired, dark bearded star I photographed. I was terribly upset when he died in 1995," said Rothschild.
Dead Symphony Number 6 will be presented only Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Meyerhoff.
