Washington Area Targeted For Digital TV Outreach
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
The Federal Communications Commission has identified the Washington region as a high priority area for educational outreach about the switch to digital television.
Commissioners and other staff plan to travel to the 82 priority markets to host public events and to work with local broadcasters to expand their number of public service announcements about it.
Starting Feb. 17, homes that do not receive cable or satellite services and have only analog televisions will need digital converters to receive over-the-air signals.
A federal program allows households to apply for up to two $40 coupons to help pay for the converter boxes.
Nielsen Media Research says 8.6 percent of television households in the Washington-Hagerstown television market depend on over-the-air signals.
