Make Sure You're Ready For DTV Conversion

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― In just 63 days, television in America will never be the same.  On February 17, all broadcast signals will be purely digital.  That will be big changes for some of you; others won't notice the difference.  To prepare the estimated 100,000 in our area who have to make changes, we've come up with a special test of your equipment.  Mike Schuh is in the heart of WJZ to explain.

All Baltimore's TV stations performed a simultaneous test.  Different programming were shown on the digital and analog transmissions.  If you're ready for the digital conversion, you continued to see Mike Schuh.  Otherwise, you saw color bars and and a number to call to get help with the analog to digital conversion.

"The only people who are stuck are the 13% of the households who only get TV over the airwaves," said John Mackerron.

The conversion is going to happen across the country at the same time, so it's advised that if you need to get a converter, you do so quickly, ecause it's probable they'll sell out near transition time.

Baltimore was identified as one of the areas with large concentrations of people getting their TV signals from rabbit ears or antennas on their roofs.

"Digital TV is a better form of TV.  It's a better product," said Marcellus Alexander, National Association of Broadcasters.

If you are not yet digital-ready, call 1-877-DTV-5353.  It will guide you through the process.

There are three ways to keep your televisions working: get a converter box, buy a new TV and antenna or get cable or stellite TV service installed.

The changeover is February 17.

There will be another test on January 15.
