Rebate checks to jump-start the economy aren't in the mail yet, but there is already concern some people who should get them, won't.
As
Alex DeMetrick reports, those left out of the loop will also be left out of the cash.
We're feeling the pinch from Wal-Mart to Wall Street, and voicing it this tax season.
But at tax preparation centers, there is also talk of relief in the form of those rebate checks, designed to jump-start the economy.
The economic stimulus package will provide Maryland families with up to $1,200 plus an additional $300 per child. Single individuals are also eligible for rebates between $300 and $600. Most recipients need only to file their taxes in the normal manner to receive the checks.
Members of Maryland's Congressional Delegation are pushing to get the word out to people who don't normally file.
"Such as senior citizens, disabled veterans, people receiving railroad benefits and working families who make too little to pay income taxes, are also eligible for these checks," said Rep. Elijah Cummings.
"You have that income and file a tax return, you get the money," said Sen. Ben Cardin.
Now, it's a matter of getting that word out to another 17 million Americans, who qualify and might not know it.
Along with the rebate checks, the IRS will also be reminding you that the money you receive is not taxable, but it must be declared as income on next year's filed returns.
