Psychic Businesses Booming Amid Economic Downturn
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
With a lot of people cutting back in this tough economy, more and more people are looking to psychics for answers, reports CBS station WCBS-TV in New York City.
Fahrusha is a psychic in the East Village and her clients' questions have turned from love and family to money and jobs. "As of September I've been getting many, many more questions: 'Will I keep my job?' And in the last three or four weeks people have been coming who have in fact lost their jobs."
West Village resident Cicely Freidank doesn't normally go to psychics about financial issues, but this time she turned to Fahrusha before committing to a trip to the Carribean. "I was hesitant to spend the money to go and do that in this climate, so now I'm going to Jamaica."
So how did the psychic meeting turn out? "Yeah, it worked out well, I'm glad I asked," Freidank said.
Donald Davis owns East Village Books, and says after 9/11 everyone wanted to read Nostradamus. These days his customers are searching for books on astrology and the metaphysical world. Davis says his psychic has helped with his business, and gives him peace of mind.
"I think it gives you a one up on what's going on out in the world, and you just get a little more confident having a good idea at where things may be headed," Davis said.
Mark Seltman is a hand reader and says no one has all the answers. He says he helps his clients discover what they already know, and has this warning: "I would not go to a sidewalk person who has a neon hand in the window, because they're really out to get your money."
Seltman took a look at WCBS reporter Cindy Hsu's hand, and was surprised. "You're not at all like what I would've imagined, actually you're really sensitive," he said. Seltman thinks reporters usually have a pretty tough shell.
It's best to get a lot of recommendations when searching for a psychic. As far as cost, they can charge anywhere from $5 to $600 for a reading.
