The eReader is one of the hottest tech gifts to give this holiday season.
CNET/CBS
The Barnes and Noble Nook, the Sony eReader and the Amazon Kindle all work about the same way: Users buy digital books online or directly from the device and read them on a screen that looks more like paper than a laptop.
There are some notable differences in design, however, especially when it comes to previewing titles and making annotations.
The Kindle has a button keyboard, similar to the type you might find on a smart phone. The Nook has a touch keyboard. The Sony eReader requires a stylus.
In terms of previewing titles, the Amazon Kindle lets consumers look at the first chapter for free. The Nook lets them look at the entire book for free, as long they are in a Barnes and Noble bookstore. The Sony offers a quick synopsis of the title.
The Nook and the Kindle both cost around $259, CNET reports. The Sony costs $280. Most titles cost around $10 to download.
