Army Soldiers Take To The Boat

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― You don't expect a sailor to drive a tank, or a soldier to pilot a boat, but it turns out the Army does have its own small Navy.

Alex DeMetrick
found out some of those soldiers are on the water right here in Baltimore.

The Army cast off before dawn. That's right, Army reservists crewing an Army vessel on a short run from Curtis Bay to the Inner Harbor.

"Oh yeah, the Army's well kept secret. We have about 200 vessels. Not as large as Navy ships, but we are very active," said Jim Howell, U.S. Army.

This particular vessel is big enough.  Drawbridges had to be raised on the Beltway. Christened the "Missionary Ridge" after a civil war land battle, the boat is built to land cargo on a beach.

The boat's skipper is an Army arrant officer and even though it's done the old fashioned way, not even the navigator is Navy.

The Army first took to boats during World War I, when they were charged with keeping the coastline clear of enemy mines.
